Spain has taken an important step in modernizing its air fleet with the first flight of the new C295 Search and Rescue (SAR) aircraft, developed by Airbus Defence and Space.
The test was carried out in Seville, the city where the model is assembled, and aimed to validate the aircraft’s performance and flight systems before the next stages of testing, which will precede the planned deliveries in 2026.
The new C295 SAR will replace the Spanish Air and Space Force’s veteran CN235 VIGMA aircraft, bringing significant advances in technology and efficiency. The aircraft features updated avionics, more modern communications, and specialized equipment for search and rescue missions, expanding its reach and effectiveness in maritime and coastal operations.
In total, Spain has ordered eight units of the model, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing its air capabilities. The C295 is globally recognized for its versatility and ability to operate on short or unprepared airstrips. The new SAR configuration adds enhanced sensors, real-time data sharing, and systems that increase situational awareness, ensuring faster and more effective responses during rescue missions.
